Waitlist - not disappear

I'd like more functionality and history for the waitlist. As it works now, it seems like if someone adds themselves to the waitlist for a particular date, it will surely add them to the list. But after that date, they disappear from the list? I'd like to keep them on the overall list, so I can follow up with them later for more options. It's like their entry on the list just completely disappears!
