How to take deposits for bookings on Shopify
Shopify has no deposit button, but there are three ways to take one for a booking. The simplest is a deposit setting in a booking app: the customer pays part of the price at checkout, such as 50%, and you send an invoice for the rest from the booking. You can also sell a deposit variant, or take no payment online and collect it all at the visit.

Your options
A deposit setting in the booking app
- Best for
- Services where you want the rest paid online, by invoice.
- Limits
- The deposit shows at checkout as a discount. On Easy Appointment Booking it needs Pro Plus.
A deposit variant on the product
- Best for
- Letting each customer choose between paying in full and paying a deposit.
- Limits
- You collect the rest yourself. Nothing reminds the customer that they still owe it.
Book without payment
- Best for
- Businesses that take every payment at the visit.
- Limits
- No money changes hands online, so a no-show costs the customer nothing.
Turn on deposits in Easy Appointment Booking
- 1
Open the service
On the Dashboard, open the service. On the General tab, in Payment Options, choose Pay to book.
- 2
Turn on Require a deposit
Choose a percentage of the price, such as 50, or a fixed amount, such as $25. A fixed amount must be less than the price.
- 3
Name it
Type a deposit label of up to 20 characters, such as Deposit. Customers see it at checkout.
- 4
Collect the rest
Open the booking and click Send invoice. The app makes a Shopify draft order and the customer pays it online. If they paid in cash, click Mark as Paid.
Deposits need Pro Plus ($39/month). A deposit variant and Book without payment work on every plan.
Write a deposit policy customers accept
Say it before checkout
Put the deposit amount and what happens on a cancellation in the service description, not only in the terms.
Ask customers to agree
Add a Confirmation Checkbox intake question, such as I have read the cancellation policy. It is saved with the booking.
Use a size that fits the risk
Many businesses use 20–50% for long or costly appointments, and a fixed amount for short ones.
Generate the wording
Our free booking policy generator writes a deposit and cancellation policy you can paste into your store.
Common questions
How does the deposit show at checkout?
As a discount on the booking. A $200 service with a 50% deposit costs the customer $100 at checkout. Only Shopify Plus stores can change the words Total savings that Shopify shows.
Is the rest a separate order?
Yes. The deposit and the rest are two Shopify orders. The booking shows Paid Remaining when the invoice is paid, with links to both orders.
What if I refund a deposit booking?
The refund is at most the deposit, because that is all the customer paid online.
Can I take a deposit at the counter?
Bookings made in Shopify POS do not use deposits. Customers pay in full at the counter.
Does a deposit work for group bookings?
Yes. The deposit is worked out from the booking total, and the invoice for the rest covers every person and ticket on the booking.
