How to sell classes and workshops on Shopify
Shopify can sell a class, but it cannot sell a seat at a time. To do that, link the class product to a booking calendar. Customers pick a date and time on the product page, the calendar counts the seats that are left, and they pay through your normal Shopify checkout. Each booking becomes a Shopify order, so the class sits next to your products in one store, one report, and one payout.

Your options
A variant for each date
- Best for
- One or two dates a month, with no reminders needed.
- Limits
- You add and delete variants by hand. Inventory is the only seat count, and customers get no reminder before class.
A separate event tool, linked from your store
- Best for
- Stores that already run events on another platform.
- Limits
- Customers leave your store to pay. The sale is not a Shopify order, so it is not in your Shopify customers, reports, or discount codes.
A Shopify booking app
- Best for
- Classes that run every week, or on many dates.
- Limits
- One more app to set up. Pick one that uses Shopify checkout, so the class is a real order.
Set up a class with Easy Appointment Booking
- 1
Create the class
In the app, click New Event or Service and choose Paid service. Type the class name and pick its length, for example 90 minutes.
- 2
Choose Group and set the seats
Choose Group, and type how many people fit in one class, such as 12. Each customer can book for themselves or for a group, and the price is multiplied by the number of people.
- 3
Pick when the class runs
Choose On a set schedule for a class that runs every week, such as every Tuesday at 6:00 PM. Choose A one-off event or On a few specific days for a workshop.
- 4
Link it to a product
Let the app create the product, or link one you already have. If you link your own, turn off Track quantity in Shopify, because the app counts the seats.
- 5
Turn on the app embed
Switch on Appointment Booking in your theme editor. The product page then shows a Select a time button instead of Add to cart.
- 6
Show the seats that are left
In the calendar settings, show places left on each time, such as 3 / 12. A class that looks nearly full sells faster than one that looks empty.
A class with seats works on every plan, including Free (one active service). Reminder emails start on Standard ($15/month). Class packs and the waitlist need Pro Plus ($39/month).
Get more people to the class
Close sign-ups before class
Set a lead time, such as 12 hours, so nobody books after you buy the supplies.
Sell a class pass
A 5- or 10-class pack brings people back. They pay once and book each class when they want.
Ask what you need to know
Add an intake question for allergies, skill level, or a signed waiver. The answers show in the booking and in your team's email.
Catch the people a full class turns away
Turn on the waitlist for full dates. When someone cancels, invite the people waiting by email, or turn on automatic invites. The first to book gets the seat.
Common questions
Can I sell online courses this way?
This setup is for live classes that happen at a set time, in person or on Zoom. A recorded course that people watch when they want needs a course app instead.
Can one customer book for a friend?
Yes. On a group class, the customer picks how many people are coming. Each person takes one seat. You can set a minimum and maximum group size on the Pro plan and higher.
Can I charge less for children?
Yes. Ticket types let one class sell Adult and Child seats at different prices. All ticket types share the same seats. Ticket types need the Pro Plus plan or higher.
What happens if I cancel a class?
Cancel each booking from the Bookings page and refund it. The customer gets a cancellation email. On Pro Plus and higher, the app can refund the Shopify order for you when a paid booking is cancelled.
Do discount codes and gift cards work?
Yes. The booking goes through your normal Shopify checkout, so your discount codes and payment methods work as they do for any product.
