A customer can buy a package for someone else. They tick This is a gift on the product page, and the recipient gets the package in their own inbox: a note from the buyer, the package code, and a link to book. The recipient books and uses the sessions. The buyer only pays.

Turn on gifting

Gifting is a setting on each package:

  1. On the Dashboard, click Sell a package, then open the package.
  2. Tick Allow gifting.
  3. Click Save.

New packages have Allow gifting on by default. Packages you created before gifting launched have it off, so turn it on for each package you want to sell as a gift.

The gift option appears on your product page through the Appointment Booking app embed, so it must be on in your theme. To check, go to Settings > Theme integration in the app. Theme app embed should say Active.

What the buyer sees

On the package's product page, a This is a gift checkbox appears above the Add to cart button. Ticking it opens the gift details:

  • To — the recipient's name
  • From (optional) — who the gift is from. If left blank, the name from checkout is used.
  • Message (optional) — a personal note, up to 300 characters
  • Recipient's email — where the package is sent
  • When should we send it? — Send now emails the recipient right after checkout. Send on a date holds the email until the morning of the date they pick, up to a year ahead.

After they click Save gift details, a summary shows under the checkbox with an Edit button. The buyer then adds the package to their cart and checks out as usual. The recipient's name shows on the cart line as Gift for.

After checkout

  • The recipient owns the package. It is created in their name and email, so they can redeem it from the email link or from their customer account. The Shopify order stays the buyer's.
  • The recipient gets a gift email with the subject " sent you a gift": the buyer's message, the package code, and a button to book. With Send on a date, it goes out between 9 and 10 am (your store's timezone) on that date.
  • The buyer gets a confirmation that the gift is on its way, or that it is scheduled for the chosen date. It does not include the package code or booking link.
  • The expiry starts when the recipient gets it. For a scheduled gift, an expiry period counts from the send date, not the purchase date.
Tip:

With Klaviyo connected, the recipient's email is sent through your Package purchased Klaviyo flow instead, with the gift details on the event (is_gift, gift_from_name, gift_message). Add them to your template so recipients see who the gift is from. The buyer's confirmation is always sent by the app. The Shopify Flow Package Purchased trigger fires for the recipient, on the send date for scheduled gifts.

Manage gifted packages

Gifted packages appear on the Packages page like any other, under the recipient's name, with a Gift from line showing who bought it. A scheduled gift also shows Email scheduled for and the date until it goes out. To find every gift one person bought, choose Search by Gift sender in the search options.

Open a gifted package with Edit to see the sender, their message, and when the gift email was (or will be) sent. If the recipient can't find their email, or the buyer gave the wrong address:

  1. Correct the customer email if needed and save.
  2. Click Resend package email.

Resending a scheduled gift sends it immediately, and it will not be sent again on the original date.

Limits

  • One recipient per cart line. To gift the same package to two people, add it to the cart twice with different recipient details.
  • Some themes' "Buy it now" button skips the gift details. Ask buyers to use Add to cart for gifts. If the details are lost, the order is treated as a normal purchase and the buyer owns the package.
  • A gift to the buyer's own email is a normal purchase. The same applies if gifting is off for the package, or the recipient's email is not valid.
  • A scheduled gift is visible early in the recipient's customer account. If they log in before the send date, they can already see it there.
